Choosing the Best Fridge: Sizes & Types

How do I know if my refrigerator has a freon?

Oftentimes you can tell if your refrigerator’s refrigerator was built before 1994 and is equipped with a freon system based on the label on the inside of the refrigerator. This is only a rule of thumb. There are actually a few refrigerator manufacturers that are interested in encouraging their consumers to “accidentally” leave their refrigerators refrigerated during frigid winter months by renaming the door of the refrigerator in different colors to indicate the type of refrigerant that is stored inside.

The best way to find out if your refrigerator has a freon is to have a technician inspect it. Freon systems are usually blue in color. Many refrigerators will come with an inspection sticker. If you do not see one on your refrigerator, you can usually ask the attendant if you can have the system inspected for freon.

Check your gas mixture gauge and, if it reads below 40°F, then it probably has a lot of the thing. Some parts of the state may have a higher freon level than others. North Dakota has a high freon level, and even high freon concentrations have an average of approximately 42°F.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises against using freon refrigerators because of the threat of potential frost buildup. The agency also provides suggestions on proper use and care for your refrigerator.

If your refrigerator runs an adequate amount of electricity, it may have freon. Check with your service provider.

Contact your local phone book (store locator on the library’s website) for your nearest retail store, or call 1-800-424-2424 or 1-800-726-3054 to order free, downloadable refrigerator thermometer. This product will determine if your refrigerator’s old-fashioned atmosphere contained freon and needs replacement.

How much space does a refrigerator need?

This is a tough one. Our local store wouldn’t be happy with a 400 sq.ft. rack! We went with a 700 sq.ft. rack and our refrigerator’s capacity was halved. A 400 square foot fridge will hold 1.2 tons of food or around 3,500 calories. A 700 sq.ft. fridge will hold 0.85 tons of food or about 1,600 calories. That’s a difference of 20% of the caloric value of the food we served up.

Find out with our free calculator. Kitchen modernism is complicated by the fact that modern appliances tend to have almost infinite shelves that can accommodate endless gadgets and food storage. This complexity is counteracted by the kitchen appliances of the past—the gas stove, the electric oven, the gas cooker, the grill, the stoves, and the dishwashers—which were bulky and inefficient and had limited areas for storage.

Theoretically, you don’t need a ton of space for a fridge. A plastic-frozen, microwaveable prototype that’s now commercially available can fit inside a commercial closet. But a lot of people (including many people who rely on gas stoves) love a bigger fridge. We’re building a big one to give everyone more room to store food.

How can I get more space?

Try an immediate improvement: get rid of the contents of the freezer when you open it up to clean it out.

What is a good price for a refrigerator?

When a customer buys a refrigerator, he/she is expected to pay for the price of the fridge rather than simply buying it on a fixed price.

Once the price of the fridge is known, it is important to find the best price for the fridge. Do not negotiate the price of a refrigerator if you are not familiar with the exact price the consumer expects. The result of a delay in negotiating will be to increase the cost of the fridge by multiplying the money one’s spent on the fridge by the extra money one has already.

A manufacturer can set the price and the cost is called overhead. So what is the overhead?

Cost: Where do you sell your products? How many units? Will it be 100,000 or 100,000,000?

Backup: Does the appliance do more or less than it was built for?

When you make a decision like buying a refrigerator, there is a lot of hidden costs. You have to buy all of those things, including one for when you can’t use the refrigerator.

Generally speaking, one could buy a refrigerator at a store and get it for around $20,000–$30,000, depending on the model. That price doesn’t account for the cost of your insurance, your license, state tax (if applicable), or even a 401(k) plan contribution. So to quote US Military, “you might as well get a $20 mil fridge.” In our home, I would say that a household fridge could cost $4,500 to $6,000, and perhaps only $.

So if you aren’t familiar with the price of a refrigerator, what should you look for?

Like most household appliances, a good refrigerator, or appliance, should be one you can afford.

Check the new, before-sale price (which will be at the appliance store on the day you pick up the refrigerator).

The old used price (which should be more expensive) can be found on the manufacturer’s website or through a classified ad in your neighborhood.

How long do fridges last for?

Having a fridge is something that will stay with you and you will be able to keep it longer than you think. The longer you leave it, the more gas and electricity it emits, so make sure you test the operating temperature and electrical supply regularly to make sure it’s working properly.

Some fridges have a cooling coil inside the unit which can help reduce the consumption of fuel. Older fridges have cooling coils which are prone to bursting if they get too warm or hot. Fridges with the newer, hybrid technology draw power.

As you’ll be using the same one most of the time, you should probably consider replacing your fridge after the first few years.

Why buy a wine fridge?

A wine fridge is a great way to preserve your wine, especially if you’re a starter who doesn’t make much in the way of wine. It also provides that iconic…boom!

In the summer, wine producers make special draft wine to be kept at higher temperatures in a fridge, so a wine fridge can provide the same.

Gibbs lives in a Connecticut home with the electricity provided by a ONEE, a New England Energy Cooperative that supplies the power needed to run a refrigerator. The New England Gas & Electric Company, the region’s largest electric utility, buys about one-third of its electricity from the NEGC, and that’s why Gibbs’s refrigerator has been on the grid since 2008.

If your fridge is installed at the height of your kitchen, you’ll want to replace it with the next most efficient model or with another fridge. To calculate the life of your fridge, take its capacity, divide it by its lifespan, and add 60% for replacement.
